Style Michelle Obama

It's been over two years since Barack Obama was elected the first African-American President of the USA. Since then, the fashion focus on the First Lady's wardrobe has not diminished. And with her many style supporters, Michelle has propelled designers including Peter Pilotto, Jason Wu, Isabel Toledo, Thakoon and St Erasmus into the limelight.

A penchant for bare arms, high street brand J. Crew, oversized pearl necklaces, brooches and waisted belts has grown into an often emulated signature style and earned comparisons to Jackie Onassis as the chicest First Lady in the Whitehouse since the reign of the Kennedys.

During the campaign trail for the preliminaries, Mrs Obama repeatedly won over the fashion critics with her fresh take on what a future First Lady should wear and, in doing so, provided a sartorial point of difference between herself and the likes of Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin. Suddenly waisted belts, costume jewellery, high street brands and bare upper arms were on fashion's agenda.
